9/11 Guest Speaker

Rear Admiral Sonny Masso

Rear Admiral Sonny Masso served in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Office retiring in October 2009 after 32 years, nine commands, and visiting nearly every country in the world. He is originally from Southern California, and attended the University of Mississippi on a Naval ROTC scholarship.

As a Flag Officer, Rear Admiral Masso served as the Vice Commander of the Naval Surface Forces Command working on the training, equipment, maintenance, and manning of all Surface Ships in the Navy, as well as focusing on readiness and training of the Force. He was next assigned as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education. He focused on requirements, policy, congressional affairs, and business process governance for the navy’s 350,000 uniformed personnel. He then was promoted to a second-star and served as the Commander, Navy Personnel Command/Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel, responsible for the Navy’s Manpower and Personnel in every aspect of the Navy Total Force Enterprise.

Rear Admiral Masso was highly decorated and received eleven personal medals, including the Navy’s Distinguished Service Medal. Of all his personal recognitions, he is most proud of the Meritorious Unit Commendation his Command received for service in the Pentagon during the 9/11 disaster, where his command tragically lost 34 personnel.

Rear Admiral Masso serves Herdt Consulting as an executive consultant, and on the Advisory boards of Blueridge Networks, Quantum Leap Innovations, and as a Senior Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies in Cyber Security. He is a published author and in his spare time plays guitar.
